Gustavo Cerati, former lead singer of legendary Argentinian band Soda Stereo and the greatest musician ever to live on the planet, suffered a stroke after his concert in Caracas, Venezuela on Friday. The news were all over the place, including a post on his official website downplaying the problem, but now it appears that things are much worse than first reported.
I’m a huge fan of the man (he is one of my three allowed gay-crushes). I hope him a quick recovery from this. Fuerza Natural, Gustavo!
Here are some previous mentions of Gustavo Cerati in The MKX®.
I’m not fully recovered from SXSW concert overload yet but singer, composer, guitar player and former Brazilian Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil was in town so missing it wasn’t really a smart option. It was a beautiful all stings acoustic concert. No video, but you can at least hear this low quality recording. Enjoy!
Update March 29, 2010: The concert was at the Hogg Memorial Auditorium.
Ok, last SXSW 2010 post.
Saturday was the final day of South By Southwest. Destination: Beauty Bar – or rather, a seemingly improvised venue called “Beauty Bar/Palm door” three blocks south of the real Beauty Bar. The place had three nasty problems:
In spite of this, it turned out to be an excellent night with one of the best shows I’ve seen in a SXSW.
Photos and videos of the shows if you read more…
Hard to catch up with all the stuff I saw. Here are some more photos and videos from last Thursday at South By Southwest (Warning: Extreme close-ups). First, some photos of Ozomatli’s awesome dance circle finale, where they get off stage with the crowd. Then, if you read more, you can see to another video of Bajofondo and one of Ozomatli that didn’t make it into the last post.
At this point I’m feeling the effects of two days of concerts plus longer than usual workdays. But I had to get back to Auditorium Shores to see a classic rock act.
Not only are they still alive and playing, but they currently have the Top Selling 8-track in the World! These guys were playing before I was born… I mean, I thought La Maldita Vecindad looked old but these people make them look like Hanna Montana. I only know a few of their songs yet it was a really good concert.
Video and the rest of the bands if you read more…

SXSW is upon us. Last night the Music Festival got started (the Interactive and Film parts start earlier). On the first night I went dowtown with Eli to see the shows at Antone’s. The line was really long and we barely made it in. We only got to see the last two shows of the night. I apologize for the crappier-than-usual photos: I brought my pocket digital camera but not its memory card. I guess the camera wasn’t the only thing in need for better memory. So it’s all crappy iPhone photos/video.

Moon
My first memory with your beauty does not sweep me,
I throw my guitar and my father yells at me,
My mother says: “That’s my sinner”,
And she takes me for a comforting walk in the moonlight. My second memory: Your eyes do not sweep me,
I left home to the dangers of time,
When I asked you “Will you always be mine?”
You replied: “Look to the moon, a man’s already been there”.After a year we rented
A room in front of the moon,
I started playing in a dark bar
On the street of the metal workshop. And they screamed: “Take down
The short guy in the tuxedo”,
And only one said: “Kid, kid,
You shall yet bring down the moon of them”.It was such a time
When happiness came through anger,
We laughed about everything,
Burned whatever we got our hands on,There was nothing left
But to hug our troubles,
To say: “Yesterday was good
And tomorrow will be too”.Yesterday was good,
Yesterday was good,
Yesterday was good,
And tomorrow will be too. It’s hard to concentrate,
Because your beauty still haunts me,
It’s hard to say “It’s a shame”
Or to say “Maybe”.Instead, I dance
And yell to the moon: “Come down”.
And blame the world
For my pain.Sometimes I forget,
How I started in front of the moon,
When you forget, yes, yes,
Poor youThere’s rain in the sky
No moon in the meantime,
When it comes out we’ll walk together
Until we disappear. It was such a time
When happiness came through anger,
We laughed about everything,
Burned whatever we got our hands on,There was nothing left
But to hug our troubles,
To say: “Yesterday was good
And tomorrow will be too”.Yesterday was good,
Yesterday was good,
Yesterday was good,
And tomorrow will be too.
