MacWallet Air

Thin is in, and even though I did not end up buying the fashionable MacBook Air (for now… ed.), I was able to shed a few millimeters in a different area.

You see,  I’ve always hated thick wallets and have always struggled to maintain my wallet thin. It’s comfortable and stylish, unlike my haircut. I just can’t stand the bulge in my back pocket. Nor unsightly panty lines, but that’s a different story. So this time I took some action. After a long and arduous search, I found the perfect wallet: The Bosca Nappa Vitello.

  • Thin
  • Beautiful
  • Made of Nappa leather: soft yet durable.
  • The pockets I need… no more, no less.
  • Folds in half (not in three).
  • The precise height of a dollar bill.

This thing is great. Filled with everything I need (but nothing more) it’s less than 1 cm thin. This means that I no longer look like the Tower of Pisa when I’m sitting down. For comparison purposes, I took a photo of my wallet side by side with two of my friend’s wallets. The difference is remarkable:

Yes. It’s a thing of beauty. Right now I’m working on another little project: I figure that if I scan my insurance card, my drug prescription card, and my contact information card I can print them all scaled down in a single piece of paper that would get laminated, thus cutting thickness down by another millimeter (a respectable 11%). Better stop wasting time on this blog and get to work on what’s important!

Many thanks – keep’em coming

One of the advantages of having my own blog and writing about whatever pleases me (and pretend like I know something about the subject at hand), is that you can let other people know what sort of things you like. Last June I wrote about chocolate. This January, Daniela Totah and Eva Noyola each brought me a bar of very special and unique chocolate. Beautiful. Many many thanks.

Eva brought a bar of Jahrgangs-Schokolade 2006 (link takes you to the 2004 edition). Say that ten time very fast and you can win your own. This is a 99% pure cocoa goodness as far as I can tell given how rusty my German is.

Totah  brought a new bar by Israeli company Elite (makers of the Cadbury Flake clone known as Mekupelet): The Elite Creme Brulee.

Yummy. A full review of each bar will be posted right after pigs can fly. If you feel like giving me a present but don’t know what to give me, you can always follow this link for a few hints.

Family visit

As you can see in the photo, my parents and Moi were in town last weekend for Arturito and Debbie’s wedding. I will post something about that sometime in the future.

Above: two boxes of Noche Buena beer (2008 edition), one box of Carta Blanca Edición Especial (which came out recently and I’ve never tried) and one bottle of Tequila Herradura Reposado. My parents think, apparently, that this is the only way to get my friends to hang out with me.

They’re right.

Bad Medicine

I’ve been fighting this nagging throat infection/cough/cold for a while now. This morning, the doctor upgraded me to some stronger antibiotics. Listed side effect: Sore throat – which is what started it all. Go figure.

This also means no fast for me for the first time since I’m 13 (which was like ten years ago). For the rest of you loyal readers who will: tzom kal.

Conga

This short video from Saturday’s Mexico Independence Day + Jeronimo Mota’s birthday. Being the only sober person in the premises (damn you antibiotics!) I ended up documenting the wedding-like conga line.

Freaky

So here I am, drawing a portrait of Aarón Kirsch (a.k.a. dad). I’m using photos as reference. I thought it’d be fun to draw (chubby face and really hard hair). I’m almost done sketching with a pencil, so I step back to take a look and to my surprise, it looks just like my brother Moi.

Holy shit. That’s scary.
I’ll keep working at it though. If it comes up ok I will upload a scan. If not, I will pretend it never happened. In the meantime, I uploaded some more sketches from the Life Drawing Programs workshops at AVAA that I’ve made to the Monos section of The MKX® Photo Central.

Lindt Excellence 99% Cacao

“La couleur : noirissime – la senteur : sublissime.
En bouche, la force du cacao presque pur, puissamment aromatique.
Un chocolat de connaisseur.
Laisser-le fondre sur la langue et vivez un plaisir d’exception…”

You may or may not have read a recent post on my newly found addiction to extremely dark chocolate (but not to chocolate, that’s been there forever).

That was before my recent trip to Miami, FL. In the Aventura Whole Foods Market I saw an intriguing little white box: Lindt Excellence 99% Cacao.

This is the only chocolate bar I have ever seen that comes with eating instructions. It tells you to work your way up from the less concentrated varieties before you try this one. You should start with a small piece. Avoid chewing. Accompany with coffee. And it was great. Too bitter for most people (like the first time you try beer) but then you get hooked. I’ve been craving for more. The %80+ sissy stuff is not doing it for me anymore.
The problem is, now I can’t find it anywhere. I called a bunch of places in Austin, I sent Jaco back to the store in Florida (it’s gone!) and I’m afraid of placing an order online! ($60 for a box, that will arrive in who knows what condition in the central Texas summer heat).

Please help me.

Oh, and I want to add a note about the newly found health benefits of chocolate: Since I switched to the ultra-dark stuff, I can hear very faint noises far, far away. The clot in my brain dissappeared so I can think clearly again and see out of my left eye. I also grew 3 cm.

Update (Jul 22, 2007): Found it at World Market in Lakeline Mall! Thanks to Carolina for the tip.
