E. A. S. T. 2009 – reminder

eastlogo

Don’t forget that this coming Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd is your last chance to go to the East Austin Studio Tour, in my humble opinion one of the city’s best yearly events and best kept secrets (people just don’t know about it!). Over 150 art studios open their doors for you to visit, all of them located in the eastern part of the city. I bet you didn’t know there were so many!

The exhibitions cover just about any kind of plastic art you can think off: pottery, sculptutre, photography, painting, metal works, etc. going from “even I can do that” to “that should be in a museum”.

Expect a complete report from  The MKX® soon.

Ugly Nun sighting

The real deal? Or a copycat?
The real deal? Or a copycat?

The MKX® received reports a few weeks ago about an Ugly Nun sighting in South Miami Beach late last month. Since this was the first time we ever heard of The Ugly Nun being outside of Austin, and there was no hard proof on the reporsts, we decided not to publish anything. After all, we receive hundreds of tips on unsubstantiated rumors every week and we can’t just post about them all.

We just received photographic evidence from an anonymous tipster about the affair. You can see it, as usual, in The MKX® Photo Central.

Texas Renaissance Festival

Texas Renaissance Festival

It is the dream of every free man and woman in the world to re-live that glorious time period that woke humanity up from the Dark Age and propelled it towards modernity: The Renaissance. Or at least that’s what the organizers of the Texas Renaissance Festival in Platersville, Texas would want you to believe.

I attended for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago. First let me get this out of the way: As far as this thing is concerned, there is no effort whatsoever to portray things in a historically manner. Sort of how Taco Bell doesn’t try to accurately portray Mexican food.

Now that we got this out of the way and you are comfortable being surrounded by people dressed up as Romans, Greeks, Middle Age peasants, Star Wars stormtroopers, etc. you can get to the fun part. The festival is much bigger and interesting than I’d have suspected, but granted, my expectations were low. They have built this really large village, with actual permanent buildings. The thing is very large. And they filled it with people dressed in ridiculous costumes who speak with a funny English accent and eat turkey legs with their hands. And that’s all good because I like dressing with ridiculous costumes, I speak with a funny English accent, and I like eating turkey legs.

Read more to see more photographic evidence.

Google \/\/ave

Google Wave invitation screen Got an invite to Google Wave tonight. It look pretty darn powerful and useful. And as a web application, it’s very impressive too. But like so many other things, the more people that use it, the more useful it becomes. Do you have Google Wave? Do you use it? What do you think? Use the comments. You say you don’t have it? Well, what a coincidence! I happen to also have a few invitations. Want one? Use the comments.

Update Nov 13, 2009: All invites are gone! Thanks for reading.

So peaceful... oy.
So peaceful... oy.

For your delight, I have posted some photos from my new nephew’s Brit-Milah (circumcision) a couple of weeks ago. They are viewable by everyone… no strong material there.

Brave as I am, I watched the whole procedure from up close and I’m pretty sure that all said and done, I am way more traumatized by the whole experienced than little Obi-Wan (a.k.a. Bernardo).

Which reminds me of this passage from the Talmud:

How do we know that Jews are optimists? Because they don’t even know yet how big it’s going to get, and already they are cutting a piece off.

More photos after the break…

On same sex marriage

This is recurring topic of conversation with my friends. My conclusion is that future Americans will look back at the whole same sex marriage debate the way present Americans look back at racial segregation. But I had no data to back it up nor any sense on how soon this could occur.

Today I stumbled upon said data by accident while reading Paul Krugman‘s blog. Indeed, it seems like time is on gay people and civil right’s side. Add the facts that 1) new generations are more likely to support same sex marriage and 2) there are more young people than old people due to demographic growth (maybe not), and this could happen sooner rather than later.

My little older brother Jacobo and his wife Joana had a healthy baby boy this morning. Why does he look so pissed off? Is it because he hasn’t met his favorite uncle yet? No. He still doesn’t know what he’s been missing all his life. The reason he’s so angry is that people have been calling him names, except for his name, because he doesn’t have one.

So Jaco and Joana asked me to come up with something.

I’m all about delegating, so I delegate to you, dear extensive readership, to help them pick a name. If your help is worthy, I promise an All-extreme-closeup Photo Gallery Exclusive Extravaganza of next week’s bris. So, pick your favorite from the list below. As an experiment, you are even allowed to add new options to the poll (yeah… that just can’t go wrong). Happy naming!

Update: His name is Bernardo.
