Cool cartoon by Pulitzer-winning cartoonist Mark Fiore. He happens to be the first guy to win an editorial cartooning Pulitzer for an entry of entirely online animations.
iPad in the news
Above are some news items from the iPad launch day. Sure, you’ve seen it a hundred times. But if you look closer, you’ll see that the blonde bombshell in the photo and video is none other than Julieta Pessah Kirsch, my cousin and official representative of the Kirsch family at the iPad launch.
I was there only in spirit.
The Tablet
And here I am thinking that the tablets were supposed to be received in Shavuot, not Passover. Still, the image seemed appropriate. The iPad lands today. (image source)
Gilberto Gil

I’m not fully recovered from SXSW concert overload yet but singer, composer, guitar player and former Brazilian Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil was in town so missing it wasn’t really a smart option. It was a beautiful all stings acoustic concert. No video, but you can at least hear this low quality recording. Enjoy!

Update March 29, 2010: The concert was at the Hogg Memorial Auditorium.

Comments not going through
A while ago I installed a captcha-based system called reCAPTCHA in my comment system. CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) work like this: Some garbled text is diplayed that is very hard for a spam bot to read, but relatively easy and only slightly annowing for a real human to type. It worked well. reCAPTCHA is even better because the hard to read text is not computer generated, it actually comes from real books that are being digitized but on those words the computers are having a hard time reading it. So you do a little bit of useful work and I get no comment spam.
Lately, it worked too well. Turns out that a pretty serious bug shipped in a recent version of reCAPTCHA that marked every comment as spam. I went into my comment spam folder and manually approved a few of these comments. I also installed the fix. I apologize and I hope I didn’t miss anything.
Your comments are very welcome and highly encouraged. They make me feel like someone reads the stuff I post here. Sorry about the bug!
Machacado
I have learned my lesson. If I’m going to eat machacado, I’m going to do it right: on the road between Monterrey and Laredo (or make it myself). No more pale Tex-Mex wannabes. ¡Buen provecho!

SXSW 2010 Music Day 4
Ok, last SXSW 2010 post.
Saturday was the final day of South By Southwest. Destination: Beauty Bar – or rather, a seemingly improvised venue called “Beauty Bar/Palm door” three blocks south of the real Beauty Bar. The place had three nasty problems:
- A serious drainage issue that made the whole place stink, even though the bathrooms were surprisingly neat.
 - The bar had no way to charge credit cards, which is bad for today’s cash-less American society (and for my friends with cash who were nice enough to buy me beer).
 - A horribly annoying wooden column right in front of the stage, as you can see in the photos I took.

In spite of this, it turned out to be an excellent night with one of the best shows I’ve seen in a SXSW.

Photos and videos of the shows if you read more…
