Apple and Mac related stuff.

A good iPad bag

I was looking for a while for a good travel bag to use with my iPad. I wanted something with the following characteristics:

  • Fits the iPad while inside the Apple case, the charger and cable, and just a bit of extra room for things like tickets and passport. But not much else. Small as possible.
  • Has a shoulder strap.
  • Does not look like a purse.

I found this cheap Case Logic bag: The BUA-10 7-10″ Netbook / iPad Attaché. While it’s not really designed for the iPad (it’s about 2 centimeters too long), it happens to be almost perfect.

It has a little front pocket, and inside there is a business card holder, a pen holder, and another small pocket.

To be honest, the build quality of the bag could be better, but for $20 I’m not going to complain much. Recommended. But if you want something nice, this Targus bag (which is not out yet) is more expensive but looks good.

Front pocket. The velcro does not inspire much confidence. I wish the front pocket was a little roomier and had a zipper.
Credit card holder, a small pocket, and a pen holder. You can also stuff a magazine inside the case, with your iPad. But only barely.

MacBook Air

I stopped by the local Apple Store to look at the new MacBook Air. Man it’s so tiny! According to the reviews and to what little I played with it, it seems fast enough for most daily tasks. My only recommendation is to get the one with the bigger 128 GB hard drive. Not a single demo machine at the store had the 64 GB one, they all had the 128 GB drive. And all the demo units had their hard drives already more than half full. You do the math.

Newton 120

Is that some sort of iPad prototype? Nope, it’s a Newton: the original tablet, or at least the first PDA. Moi found Jaco‘s first Newton: a MessagePad 120 circa 1992. We took out the old batteries from the Newton and its the external 2400 bps Apple Newton Fax Modem which had luckily not leaked.

Plug it in to the wall and voilá! It works, and it still has a bunch of contacts stored from the mid nineties. These things were really, really nice and at least a full decade ahead of their time.

That's my reflection, not my photo... the screen is greyscale.

Vonage Mobile for iPhone

Sort of a plug, but here it goes: Vonage, the VoIP phone company, released an interesting app for iPhone, iPod touch, and Android (iPad coming soon).

It works like this: you install the Vonage Mobile application on your phone and log in using your Facebook account. Once you do that, it will show all your friends that also happen to have this application installed. You can then call them and talk to them, over both 3G and WiFi. And it’s free – even if they are in a different country – because the call goes over the internet.

The app is far from perfect. For instance, it does not yet support multitasking on iOS 4. But it works, and it’s free, and it’s convenient. Hopefully they work the kinks out soon. Try it out, and if I am your Facebook friend, then I will automatically show up on your contacts list. However, be careful if you are using this on 3G and have a limited data plan.

iPhone users have more sex

Deep down I already knew it… but now there is some numerical data backing up the claim. The good people of okcupid, an online dating website I don’t use – but whose super interesting blog I do read, analyzed millions of their user photos in order to draw some conclusions. Some of them:

  • iPhone users have more sex than other smartphone users.
  • Photos taken with more complex cameras make their subjects appear more attractive, which explains why I look so good on my World Cup photos.
  • Read more, if you care.
