A darn good party

For no good reason, we decided to have a party last night. But not just any party. A darn good party. 100+ people showed up and utterly trashed my house.

Special thanks to logistics specialist Julia Gallegos, Cheff Nathan Finkelstein and decorator / all around nice guy Arturito Karakowsky. Music and technical expertise were provided by DJ Cetrulo and DJ^2. If it wasn’t for them, we would have been listening to nothing but Soda Stereo all night.

Also, some special words go out to everyone who came from out for the party: Sarai, Efrat, Vanessa, David, Don Filemon, Nancy, Betty, Johnny Kings, Sandrita and Juan. The party wouldn’t have been the same without you. We would have had more beer-per-capita.

The “cleaning the day after” turned out to be the real party. A lot of poeple helped there too: Efrat, Arturito, Sofía, Carolina, Julia and Arturo.

And… if you read this far: Photos.

[UPDATE 11/21/2005]: See more of Darth Cetrulo. Jaramillo has posted some pictures of his own.

[UPDATE 2 11/21/2005]: Johnny Kings posts even more pictures. Darth Cetrulo unleashed!

[UPDATE 3 4/30/2008]: Read on to see original evite text.

Juan Gabriel – San Antonio 2005

Juan Gabriel

Along the lines of Wednesday’s concert, I went to see Juanga to San Antonio on Saturday.

Yup, the crowd was quite different.

This guy is now 55, and doesn’t move or sing like he used to, but his show is still quite good. He has an awesome mariachi band, and everytime he does one of his effeminate gestures (which was very often) the crowd would stand and go wild. And of course, his interpretation of the timeless classic “Querida” brought tears to everyone present.

In other news, it seems we were pretty lucky to go see him that night because tonight in his Houston concert he fell from the stage and banged his head and wrist quite hard, so the tour may be over. Poor Juanga.

Depeche Mode – San Antonio 2005

Depeche Mode – Houston 2005

Last night I went to the Depeche Mode concert in San Antonio with Eva, Yoshia and Nathan. It was very good, even though in the row in front of us they were smoking cheap cigarretes during the whole concert, on our left there were 2 goth teenager girls screaming the WHOLE time and right behind our heads there was a hallway where people kept spilling beer, and as a result, someone slipped and there was even a fight.

And, don’t worry, the photo above was not taken by me, it was taken by someone else in Houston a few nights earlier. I was sitting muuuch farther away from the stage last night.

Anyway, the band played about half of the new CD and some of their classics. Also, my friends Johnny Kings and Sandra were there, although I didn’t see them.

On Saturday: Juanga

Scariest pumpkin ever

In the spirit of Halloween, I carved a pumpkin for the very first time.It was a very educational experience. I decided to carve the globe. I carved out the full American continent, Africa, Europe and parts of Asia, but if I did Russia I’d be left with no pumpkin.Unfortunately, after a day, the pumpkin collapsed right on Panama (note to self: next time leave the Panama Canal in for support).Debbie carved a very scary angry face. It was much scarier after the thing sat in the kitchen and I got back from spending the weekend in Monterrey. It grew some strange foamy white and black fungus inside (note to self: next time don’t eat it).

World Champions!

A couple of weeks someone asked me:

"Do you think Mexico will ever win the World Cup?".
And I answered:
"We will not live to see the day Mexico wins the World Cup".

Sad. I know.

However, a few minutes ago Mexico beat the crap out of Brazil (3-0) in the final of the Sub-17 World Cup. This gives me hope… 2010 anyone?

As an interesting note, the star of the mexican team and one of the MVPs of the tournament, Giovani Do Santos, used to sit right behind me every Saturday in the Tecnologico Stadium, to watch the Monterrey games with his dad and little brother. His dad Zizinho was playing at the time with La Raza, the indoor soccer team of the Continental Indoor Soccer League.
