Apple and Mac related stuff.

Boxee

For some time now I’ve had a Mac mini connected to my TV and I love it. Everything that plays on the TV goes through the computer: Live television (via a tuner), DVD playback, music, music videos, streaming TV shows, streaming movies, photos, etc. Great little HTPC.

However, I’ve been constantly struggling with the 10-foot user interface. The built-in Front Row is too limited for my needs. Sure, I can do everything with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard; but it’s hard to control the regular Mac OS X interface from a couch. My eyesight is good, but not that good.

Marcos 3G

The day after I was finally liberated from the shackles of a 2-year contract with one cell phone operator, I signed my cellular freedom away for another two years of shackles, this time under a different cell phone operator… which is ok with me because it comes with 3G goodness.

Amazingly, my first generation iPhone sold at a profit. The demand for unlockable iPhones is huge. The downside is that I don’t get to use a Telcel prepaid SIM card when I go to Mexico. I can live with that.

Now I hold my shiny new iPhone 3G in my hand while I drive from work back home everyday… staring in wonder at the blinking blue dot (You are here.) while in satellite view of Google maps. It never gets old.

You really need to get yourself one, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Psychedelic iPhone

The photo below was taken with my iPhone:

Photo Booth for iPhone? Marcos as seen through Steve Jobs’ famous RDF?

No.

Sometime during my recent trip, my iPhone decided to play some games on me. First, it decided that a stripe near the top of the screen will not be sensitive to touch anymore. While this didn’t make the phone unusable, it did make it extremely annoying to use. Second, the camera went all Warhol on me (as seen above).

While I could have probably sold the thing on eBay, touting the “enhanced” camera as a feature rather than a problem, I decided to have it repaired instead. Dropped it off last night at the Apple Store and picked up the replacement today. The phone is now synced up to my computer and working perfectly with the 2.0 software. Kudos to the great and quick service to Apple!

Still, I’m going to get the iPhone 3G soon.

WebKit passes Acid 3, world rejoices

Click for fullsize

As of tonight’s nightly build, WebKit (Safari‘s Open Source rendering engine) gets a perfect score on the Acid 3 web standards test, making it the first publicly available web browser to achieve 100/100. This means it’s fully standards compliant, or at least as far as the Acid 1, Acid 2 and Acid 3 tests are concerned.

The day when all browsers are fully compliant, all websites will look the same on all browsers, and web designers (not me) won’t have to play tricks or write code for specific browsers. This will translate into better websites for everyone. Also, there will be peace in the Middle East, world hunger will end, and Britney Spears will become a role model to all young women.

Congratulations to everyone on the WebKit team!

To Air or not to Air?

I had it all planned.

Then, George walks over to my desk. George and I have this interesting thing going on: I talk him into buying Apple stuff (rather successfully) and he talks me out of buying Apple stuff.

He explained to me why I shouldn’t get a MacBook Air. Unfortunately, he’s right in all accounts.

After a little digging, for $300 less than the Air I bought a regular MacBook (white).

Compared to the stock MacBook Air, I got:

  • A faster processor (2.2 GHz instead of 1.6 GHz)
  • Twice as much memory (4 GB instead of 2 GB)
  • Larger, faster HD (120 GB instead of 80 GB)
  • Built in SuperDrive (instead of no optical drive at all)
  • 2 USB ports instead of 1
  • User-replaceable battery
  • A Firewire port (instead of zero)
  • I can later replace the hard drive for something larger, easily.

I sacrificed:

  • The coolness factor of the MacBook Air
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Multi-touch trackpad
  • 2 pounds
  • Bluetooth 2.1 (I only get 2.0)

Sure, if I traveled a lot or had to carry the machine everyday, then the smaller and lighter Air wins a lot of points. But that’s not the case. My MacBook should be in tomorrow.

Computer Detox

It‘s been almost three years since I bought my trusty 12″ Powerbook G4. It still is the best Mac laptop ever released in such a small form factor. That’s why they are still selling for decent prices on eBay.

With both Macworld and the end of my AppleCare extended warranty fast approaching, I decided to sell. The auction ended and I shipped out my computer this morning. My reasoning is that there is a very good chance Apple will introduce a new small Mac laptop (MacBook mini?) and when they do, the resell prices of the 12″ Powerbook G4 will drop harder than Edgar.

What this means for is that, for at least one month, I will not have a laptop at home.

Truth is, I have another machine at home. But there will be no browsing the news (yes – the news) over the internet while in bed; at least for a while.

If they release some super small portable next month, I will be very happy. If they don’t release anything, I will be dissappointed and just buy a 13″ MacBook. Keep those fingers crossed!
