Intermediate Mass Black Hole in omega Centauri

See the image above? Is it what you think it is? Why yes, indeed, it is. Just like you suspected, an image of the majestic globular omega Centauri, the largest and brightest globular cluster in the sky… what else on Earth – or outside of it – could it have been?.

Now, remember those peculiarities observed in it? Of course you do. Turns out that Eva Noyola, who also holds the record of most miles traveled for a Soda Stereo concert (6127) and is one of The MKX® favorite readers, deduced that Omega Centauri harbors an elusive intermediate-mass black hole smack at its center after analyzing some fancy photos taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and data obtained by the GMOS spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope in Chile. Well, that explains that. So we’ll update the image for something prettier (artist rendition though):

Congratulations Eva, you are now officially our smartest reader and we hope to hear about (but maybe not fully understand) more high profile astronomy discoveries from you. The other scientist, Karl Gebhardt, I can’t remember, but I’m sure I’ve had beers with him either at Eva’s parties back when she lived in Austin or perhaps at the Crown and Anchor. Congratulations to you as well!

Goodbye: The MKX® shuts down.

Marcos Kirsch Experience Tombstone

This is the last post.  The MKX® has shut down. It’s been a great five years. The website will remain online for now and then vanish into the great internet graveyard, like many other websites before it.

Thank you for your readership and comments.

The MKX® Staff

Update 4/9/2008: As most of you guessed, this was an April Fool’s joke. The MKX® is here to stay… for now.

WebKit passes Acid 3, world rejoices

Click for fullsize

As of tonight’s nightly build, WebKit (Safari‘s Open Source rendering engine) gets a perfect score on the Acid 3 web standards test, making it the first publicly available web browser to achieve 100/100. This means it’s fully standards compliant, or at least as far as the Acid 1, Acid 2 and Acid 3 tests are concerned.

The day when all browsers are fully compliant, all websites will look the same on all browsers, and web designers (not me) won’t have to play tricks or write code for specific browsers. This will translate into better websites for everyone. Also, there will be peace in the Middle East, world hunger will end, and Britney Spears will become a role model to all young women.

Congratulations to everyone on the WebKit team!

Soccer at The Domain

While looking for something in Google Maps (a heliport on top of my building, if you must know) I noticed that as of the time of this writing, the satellite imagery does not yet have the new and fancy The Domain shopping center accross the street.

Instead, right where Starbucks and the Apple Store now stand, you can see a beautiful soccer field. Back in 2001 we used this field to play and get kicked out every week. This is where the AMSA powerhouse NI Eagles was founded. This is also where I met many friends, including: future Polla winner Anand Narayanan; fellow blogger, drinker, and often The MKX® commenter Jaramillo; crazy marathon-running iron man Chris Griger; among many others.

Change is the only constant. That’s why I’m going to have to climb up to the roof to look for a newly built heliport.

Another interesting Google Maps tidibit: The satellite picture of my house shows a bunch of solar powered cells that were installed by a previous owner. Go find it!

Purim: Hatikva 6 vs. The Ugly Nun

On Purim’s eve (Thursday night) the Ugly Nun resurfaced at the big party down at the Hillel building thrown this year. The surprisingly excellent Israeli reggae band Hatikva 6 played live. A fun night. Chag sameach! (album)

Shelly: if you ever Google “Hatikva 6 Austin”, drop me a line!

It’s gonna be one of those days

It’s not even 9:00 AM yet and I already spilled a big mug full of coffee all over my office and myself. Damage was mostly contained and all equipment was spared. The only thing that worries me is the smell that may be left behind. Will it stay or will it go?

This has brought me a first hand appreciation of why office carpet looks the way it does. You can’t stain it, you just make it even more colorful. Get a glimpse over this older post.

It can only go uphill from here.
