.Mac… To Renew or not to Renew

Today I got the following email:

Dear Marcos,

Thank you for being a part of the first year of .Mac! We introduced .Mac in July 2002 as the set of Internet essentials for your Mac, giving you tools to share, protect, and access your important data. Since then we’ve made enhancements to every major service and introduced new ones like .Mac Address Book and .Mac Bookmarks, both with built-in syncing. We’ve also provided access to over $150 worth of additional member benefits, such as award-winning Mac OS X Jaguar training. And there’s much more to come.

Your membership is scheduled to expire on October 16, 2004 PDT, and we hope you have already decided to continue your service when the time comes. To make sure that happens, click here, log into your Account Page and click the Credit Card Info page to enter your up-to-date credit card information and check the Auto Renew option. Your card won’t be charged until your current subscription expires.

Thank you again and we look forward to another year with you.

Hmmm… should I renew? I only use the iDisk for moving files around (but it’s a pain because my iDisk is almost full and they provide a shamefull 100 MB) and some backups. I use the Homepage feature for photographs (great iPhoto integration!) and the iSync/AddressBook synchronization (which I really like). I don’t use the email.

With Tiger they will introduce .Mac Sync but that’s still a year away.

What should I do?

[UPDATE September 28, 2005] I renewed using a retail .mac box from Buy.com ($69.99). I’m a sucker.

BBClone installed

Last night I installed BBClone. It’s a pretty darn cool counter and statistics package. It’s Open Source.
A counter would have been nice when I first posted the 1984 Side by Side comparison, when traffic peaked.

Now, this counter will help me see whether I write this only for myself or other people actually waste their time in this website (unlikely).

Really, I wanted to learn how BBClone is used in order to see if it is feasable integrating it into my other website. I think it is. Man, we really need good counter statistics over there.

New sidebar link

My friend Assaf Avni practically begged me to add a link on the sidebar of my website in order to increase traffic to his website.

Transcript from conversation:

YES YES YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PUT PUT PUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s very cool, go check it out.

You’ve got GMail! (again)

Tonight my GMail account starte working again.
Furthermore… I have one GMail invitation.

Who should I give it to?

Well, of course! A lucky “The Marcos Kirsch Experience” reader.

Just post as a comment why you should get my extra GMail invitation (for a cool and highly desirable 1 GB email account with Google). I will pick the best (out of hundreds of expected responses) and send the invitation in a few days.

Let the games begin!

UPDATE 7/22/2004: Jaco gets the free GMail account. Congratulations!

New Orleans Tour 2004!

I got back from New Orleans last night. Daniel “catarrin” Jaramillo, Alejandro “chaparro” del Castillo, Luis “Brody” Navarro, Andres “Andy Boy” Marcos and myself rented Dolores “Lolita” Chrysler and spent 4 unforgetable days (although some of us already forgot some parts of the trip due to the extreme circumstances). Also, Anders Meisters, Claudia and Paula Lorente, Jimmy and Jeremy joined us some of the time.

New Orleans is a lot of fun. The drive is long but Lolita’s DVD player and the “Monterrey Campen Clausura 2003” Collector’s DVD helped make it more enjoyable. Bourbon street is amazing, a cross between Austin’s 6th street, Amsterdam’s Red Light District and a giant toilet. Cajun and Creole food are great. You can listen to great live jazz all over the place… you get the picture.

I’ll post some photographs of the trip tonight or tomorrow.

UPDATE [July 17]: I have uploaded the pictures now! Two albums: this one and this one. I’m still missing photos from Claudia and Jimmy.

UPDATE [April 12 2007]: Fixed links.

Have you seen Spider-Man 2 yet?

Yes, yes… Spider-Man 2 opened las Wednesday. So I went to see it at 12:01. Damn those west coast people! They started seeing before I did!
The movie is really great, and the special effects are awesome. Specially Doctor Octopus (the mechanical arms and the fake pectorals). Can’t wait for Spider-Man 3!

Fahrenheit 9/11

Yesterday I say this movie called Fahrenheit 9/11.

Of course, like every other respectable news outlet in the world, I must write about it.
Well, the theater was PACKED. There was a long long line outside the theater. I almost expected to see people dressed as jawas or wookiees. I mean, it was ridiculous (I didn’t get in line thanks to Yossy, but I will not elaborate on that).

The movie is good. It entertains, it shows lots of things many people don’t know (and should! this is their President), it’s even funny at times. It’s not very hard to make a movie that makes George Bush look bad, with the Florida fiasco, the Spetember 11 attacks, the invasion of Iraq and the missing Weapons of mass destruction (Google search) (very funny please follow links).
There are however very strong scenes of death and injured people in Iraq, which makes me very surprised Michael Moore whined to get the R rating lowered. It absolutely deserved the R rating.

And, of course, the whole movie is a shameless self-promoting act by the director/writer/producer. Which is a little unusual for a documentary. Starting with the movie poster, the “interviews” in which Moore keeps putting words in other people’s mouths (like in that other movie) and the ridiculous stunts, Michael Moore tries to present himself as some sort of smart-ass and self-righteous superhero during the whole film. I was not impressed.

Overall, the movie does raise some important issues and I recommend watching it. Not worth getting in line for, though.

Will it influence the outcome of the elections? I doubt it. Those that will go to see it, aren’t voting for Bush anyway. Those that are voting for Bush, won’t see it. Those who are undecided…. hmmm…
