The Bat-Cave part deux

Fellow developer and former mentee Pratik Bhadra has posted a photo of this bat, perched from the ceiling in the sixth floor of the Truchard Design Center, who knows for how many hours, about three meters away from my head, watching me, studying my every move, preparing to pounce me. It’s happened before. The bat doesn’t stand a chance against my quick reflexes, superior strength and uncanny spider-sense.
Or maybe the poor thing was scared shitless. Who knows.

Forget the Dancing Baby, All Your Base Are Belong to Us, the Star Wars Kid or even Don Filemon.

The new internet phenomena has arrived, and he comes from the great city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, México (coincidentally, so do I)…

Elite Mekupelet VS Cadbury Flake

On March 24th of 2006 I learned about the Cadbury Flake… I must admit that it wasn’t easy to learn that the strange chocolate bar from that far away land of milk and honey wasn’t all that unique.

Not only that, but as I started asking people about it, those who were aware of the existence of both candies always had strong feelings about which one is better. Puzzled, I discovered that this was not only an issue of chocolate, but of deeply entrenched national pride. It was too much fun to pass on. I had to hold a head to head contest.

After a seemingly eternal wait, a shipment of Cadbury Flake chocolate (actually, only three bars) arrived from Dubai, UAE. I had some Elite Mekupelet in my personal stash… so it’s time to decide once and for all:

Who is king of the flakey chocolate?

World Cup 2006 Sticker Album

Every four years, the world gets ready for the big party. And every four years, millions of soccer fans buy the Panini Wold Cup Official Sticker Album. I now I’ve been doing it with my brothers since 1982, and still own the 1986, 1994 and 2002 editions (I need to look for the rest).

For the 2006 World Cup in Germany the italian company Panini published the album as usual. They sell it all over the world…. except in the U.S.A. (or at least I haven’t seen it, correct me if I’m wrong). This makes things a whole lot harder. Still I press on and I am in the process of completing mine. Since buying the sticker packets must be done long distance, and trading duplicates with friends is hard because they all live in a different country [Editor’s note: Marcos has friends in this country, they just didn’t get the album], I have created a small webpage where people can track my progress (becuase YOU care!).

Yeah, it seems like it was a lot of work and makes me look like an obsessive-compulsive anal-retentive childish nerd. In reality, you wouldn’t be that far off the truth… but seriously, I promise it wasn’t bad.

Moi, Arturito, Mauri and Abrahamcito drove into town from Monterrey last night. They bought a whole box of sticker packets for me and some more for themselves. I need to paste them and record the duplicates so that I can send them down with them on Monday to my agent in Mexico. He has all the right contacts in school.

And now, presenting the My Panini World Cup Sticker Album Progress Tracking page. As of right now, I have 39.86% completed.

[UPDATE 5/2/2006] Now that didn’t take long… Moi started his own album, and made my script look pretty.

Photo of the day #4

This is my cousin <deleted>. Look at his proud smile. His elegant posture. His neat hair. His expressive hand gesture.

He literally begged me to take this picture of him. Little did he imagine that soon it’d be posted online for the world to see. Click on the photo for a full size version.

Update (October 27 2011): upon request, I have made the photo private and removed references to my cousin.

WIN A FABULOUS PRIZE
READ ON FOR DETAILS

For almost five years, ever since I moved to Austin, I have deposited almost every quarter I get in my Superman piggy bank. It filled up. Then, I took Moi‘s little “morralla” (loose change) box (circa 1985) and also filled it up. All quarters.

I wasn’t sure what to do with all these coins… I knew I wanted to get something cool with the money (an iPod, a TV, a trip to the moon). Cashing the money was another thing…

This is where Coinstar comes in.

The greedy bastards charge an 8.9% coin counting fee, but you can get, for no fee, an Amazon Gift Card. So I drove to the closest Albertson’s, and spent what were perhaps the most soothing 15 minutes I’ve had in a long time inserting quarters into a machine.

Are you wondering how much money I got? Take a guess. Below are photos of my Superman piggy bank and Moi’s lose change box, pictured next to a penny to convey a sense of proportion. Write in the comments how much money you think I cashed. Whoever is closest to the actual figure will win a cool prize. I’m serious. I don’t know what it will be yet, it depends on who wins. But it will be cool. And no… it won’t be a trip to the moon. Those are still too expensive.

Guess how much money I cashed in a Coinstar machine for an Amazon gift card. The best guess (and it has to be within $5.00 USD) wins a prize! (I promise). Read more to see the pictures! Contest ends whenever I say so.
