As you probably also know by now, from my former office in Austin I had quite the view, which allowed me every now and then to catch a glimpse of events around the area: a mall fire, a plane crash, etc.
I just received this photo of the smoke from the nearby wild fires, taken from the top floor of MoPac C. Let’s hope they are controlled and extinguished soon. It can’t hurt to do a little dance for Tlaloc, either.
The guy in the photo above, my friends, is yours truly at the shooting range. Not something I normally (ever) do. I turned out to be a pretty decent shot. I tried two handguns: a big one and a smaller one, and an M16.
Welcome to Texas
You can check out the targets below… all of them are with the handguns from 3, 7, and 15 yards away. Then there’s one from 25 yards with the M16. Not too bad, considering I didn’t think I’d hit anything at all.
I bumped into this last week. One day I will look back at this photo on my iPhone 23 and laugh at the backwards fuel-powered four-wheel contraptions we had to drive. In the meantime, I wonder if my Civic qualifies, as I walk all the way from the normal parking, surrounded by gigantic trucks and SUVs.
First, “Cohen On The Bridge”. Director Andrew Weinrib had unprecedented access to surviving hostages and commandos from Operation Entebbe. He assembled a fast paced 20 minute animated short with interviews in the background about the operation. The visuals are stunning and the story riveting. You can’t even blink. It was followed by a Q&A with the director that was equally interesting.

You can see the trailer here, but you may need Facebook access. This movie you must see. And a full length film is in the works.
Second, I saw “This is Sodom”, a movie by the guys from Eretz Nehederet. This dumb comedy was a surprise record breaker in Israel and is actually really funny. Trailer below:
Austin Rodeo: Gotta admit, that's one awesome logo.
In the midst of SXSW, I headed over to the Austin Rodeo to unleash my inner-cowboy and participate in their BBQ Cook-off… as an eater of lots of food. A few photos below.
The City of Austin is renaming the Solid Waste Services Department and they want our opinion. I’d like to name this contest “Solid Waste of my Taxes Department”. Still, it’s amusing and I’m always on board with amusing.
The current winning entry is Fred Durst Society of the Humanities and Arts. The Ministry of Filth is a good one too. I would LOVE to see garbage trucks with that name painted on the side.
