Last night I attended a concert by chassidic reggae sensation Matisyahu. Ironically, the show was at a decidedly non-kosher place: Stubb’s Bar-B-Q. Love their chopped brisket sandwiches.
Honestly, I used to think the whole Matisyahu thing was more of a gimmick than anything. I mean, it’s hard to be more gimmicky than an orthodox Jew reggae singer that has payot, a beard, and tzitzit instead of dreadlocks. I’ve been wanting to see one of his concerts more out of curiosity than anything else. The fact that the last time I tried to go they sold out (this concert he released as an album) made things worse.
But I was proved completely wrong (an extremely rare occurence): The concert was great, the music is catchy, and he’s a really good performer with lots of energy. The perfect weather helped me enjoy the concert even more.
Out of the almost two hour long concert, I managed to make out two words. I’m pretty sure at some point he uttered “Egypt” and “mashiach“. Below I have posted some more photos and the obligatory low quality YouTube videos:
