Photo of the day #12

Hotel Roosevelt

Originally uploaded by Miguel.Sanchez.

This is the Roosevelt Hotel. Surprisingly, I cannot link to its website because apparently there isn’t one.

Why is this photo featured in The MKX®, you might ask? Excellent question.

This hotel is located right behind the legendary Hotel Son-Mar, where I spent many, many, many weekends as a kid (my dad, later my mom, worked there… now my uncle), debating with my brothers whether the Roosevelt has beds or hammocks in its rooms (it was never settled). It brings back tons of childhood memories (I may one day write about them). And before you ask: No, I never actually set foot in there.

As far as I remember (which is a good 25+ years), the Roosevelt has always looked exactly the same, except for that fancy “México es Primero” sign that some marketing genius put there in the 80’s.

Photo of the day #10

A low quality photo of legendary Uruguayan central defender for Monterrey and personal icon Richard Tavares. It’s so hard to find photos of him online that when I bumped into this one I decided to post it. If you have any photos of Tavares dressed in his Monterrey uniform, send them in!

Photo of the day #9

Here’s an old photo (October 22nd, 1980). From left to right: Marcos (that’d be me), Jacobo (my older brother), Thelma (my mom), and Moi (my younger brother). I don’t know why my brothers look so confused. I also don’t know why the photo is in black and white… being 1980 and all. Amazingly, we all look exactly the same.

Photo of the day #6

In the center of the photo stands José Antonio Aguilar Bodegas, candidate for governor of the state of Chiapas for the PRI in one of the most heated races in a long time (well, at least since the last presidential election) in Mexico (~2,500 vote difference as of tonight).
But that’s not the point of the photo.
Look closely at the guy standing in the back to the right of Mr. Aguilar. That’s José Antonio Aguilar González (a.k.a. too many nicknames to list here without ofending someone), good buddy of mine who decided to shed the Torrado-style afro he had the last time I saw him for the timeless “I’m an egineer with no interest in taking care of my hair so I buzz it” look. Good luck to both the Aguilars, here’s hoping he wins the election.

Photo of the day #4

This is my cousin <deleted>. Look at his proud smile. His elegant posture. His neat hair. His expressive hand gesture.

He literally begged me to take this picture of him. Little did he imagine that soon it’d be posted online for the world to see. Click on the photo for a full size version.

Update (October 27 2011): upon request, I have made the photo private and removed references to my cousin.
